Becoming JaneRecent performances in Brokeback Mountain and The Devil Wears Prada have made Anne Hathaway one of Hollywood’s most promising young actresses, and this month sees her take the lead role in Becoming Jane. Whilst much of Jane Austen’s work, most notably Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice, is very familiar from both the small and big screens, this film tells the story of Austen herself, before fame and fortune came her way. The film follows Jane’s love affair with Tom Lefroy, an Irish lawyer. Lefroy is played by James McAvoy, who himself is becoming hot property since impressive roles in films such as the Oscar-nominated The Last King Of Scotland. Directed by Julian Jarrold, whose previous credits include the cross-dressing comedy Kinky Boots, the film also includes support from ever-reliable British acting talent such as Julie Walters, Ian Richardson and Dame Maggie Smith as Mrs Austen. There has been some controversy surrounding an American playing a national treasure such as Jane Austen, but Hathaway has proved herself to be a more than capable actress, and with such strong British support, the film shouldn’t disappoint fans of period drama.

Best known until now as a tabloid favourite and on-off girlfriend of Jude Law, Miller gets a chance to prove herself in the role of Edie Sedgwick, the wealthy, beautiful girl who went to New York in the 1960s with the intention of becoming a star. Once there she met and became the muse of Andy Warhol, the legendary pop artist who promised to make her famous. The film follows Edie’s life in New York as she becomes one of the most iconic images of the era, before her life ended in tragedy with a drugs overdose in 1971, aged just 28.
