Get out the popcorn and curl up at home Most of us love movies or sport. However as the nights draw in and the weather gets colder the trek to the local multi-plex or bar isn’t quite as appealing. For many families, getting a baby sitter or going out as a group is an expensive and logistically complex exercise. The range and quality of entertainment on offer has never been better. DVDs are now released within a few months of the theatrical release and the delay is getting even shorter. Sport is now available in stunning quality via Sky HD, broadcast complete with surround sound. The equipment is coming down in price while the quality of higher end gear rivals most commercial cinemas. A home cinema can be based around a large LCD or plasma screen or ideally a projector and screen. Projected images can be as large as you want and the image quality can be stunning. Your whole DVD and music collection can be stored on a server, such as the Kaleidescape system. This stores the media in the original quality and is fully licensed so is completely legal. The sound is equally important and makes the difference between an exhilarating experience and a dull one. Cinema surround sound consists of five or seven speakers arranged around the room along with a sub-woofer to provide the low frequency effects and bass. Cinemas can be installed in basements, loft spaces or in playrooms. If the work is planned while other renovation or building work is taking place the cables, screen, projector and speakers can be concealed in walls and ceilings and are only visible when in use. Rather than grapple with a pile of remotes, a single controller makes it easy for anyone to use. Just pressing ‘DVD’ will dim the lights, lower the screen and start the movie.
