Satyananda Yoga incorporates the whole person, not just the physical body, by promoting the balance between body, mind, emotions and spirit.
During a yoga session, you are encouraged to keep your eyes shut and to focus on the parts of your body being exercised. In the comfortable and relaxed atmosphere of the Shiva Rooms, with the gentle voice of Abhijeeta prompting your next movement, this is very easily achieved.
To begin, we lay on our backs and focussed on complete relaxation, releasing tension and negative thoughts and concentrating on calm breathing. We then began various exercises of all the joints – mainly flexion and extension with some circular movements, with emphasis on regular breathing; inhaling and exhaling in time with the movements of the exercises. Thinking about how the joints felt before and after the exercises helped us develop an awareness of our own bodies.
We finished with another complete body relaxation and some chanting of ‘om’ as we breathed out. I left feeling completely refreshed and at ease with the world!
According to Abhijeeta, one hour of yoga is as good for the body as four hours’ sleep. Satyananda Yoga is for everyone, whether you are a complete beginner or a meditative flexible yoga expert. The emphasis is placed on achieving and progressing at your own rate.

The Shiva Rooms offers a range of yoga courses, talks, workshops, treatments, retreats, books and advice. There are three treatment rooms for reflexology, aromatherapy, deep tissue massage, Reiki, Thai yoga massage, hypnotherapy, acupuncture, pregnancy and active birth yoga and baby massage.

If you can manage it, a few days on retreat is ideal in order to really gain self-awareness, develop self-healing powers, the management of physical diseases and mental stress and increase your inner strength. There is a three-day Yoga Retreat from 3-6 April at Duncton Mill, West Sussex, at the foot of the South Downs, and a whole week of yoga on a Greek island from 26 June to 3 July.
