Saved Museum? Different location? The council spokesperson for Wandsworth Council said ‘We have found a solution. We can save the museum and safeguard the council budget. We are delighted that such a prestigious trust as the Hintze Family Charitable Foundation has agreed to take over the museum. In these days of reduced public spending, there has to be another way of funding museums. The Hintze Foundation has come forward with £1m which is a hugely generous commitment, recognising the value which the people of Wandsworth have shown they place on their local history during the campaign to save the Museum.’
Graham Fisher, Chief Executive of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council for London, commented: ‘Independent trust status has always been an alternative solution to the Council’s drastic proposal to close the Museum, which would inevitably mean that access to the collection and the wonderful education services which the museum provides would be lost forever.' Andrew Holden from the MLA.said. ‘There is still a long way to go before we can be satisfied that the museum is safe,’ he said. ‘We will negotiate with Wandsworth Council about the sustainability of the project. In addition to the £1 million offered by The Hintze Foundation to cover start-up costs there is a further £200,000 over five years to cover all other costs. This will mean a drastic reduction in resourcing for the museum. Other financing will have to be found to cover this gap. We are also uncertain as to whether the footfall at West Hill will be sufficient and how are we going to handle staffing of the Museum.’
The Wandsworth Museum campaign group is setting up a Friends of Wandsworth Museum charity. To find out more, email wandsworthmuseumgroup@hotmail.co.uk.
