Heathrow runway plans

Local authorities have called on ministers to hold public meetings in all the boroughs affected by Government plans to expand Heathrow.
The Department for Transport (DfT) is expected to launch a 12-week consultation in September on proposals for making increased use of the two existing runways before adding a third in 2015. The number of flights at the airport could go up from the current annual limit of 480,000 to 800,000. The increase is equivalent to building a new airport at least the size of Gatwick. In areas like Clapham Common the expansion could lead to a permanent ceiling of noise throughout the day as the current system of alternation - where planes switch runways at 3pm - would also go. The 2M Group of councils has warned that a 12-week consultation is too short a period for such far-reaching changes.
