Britain's first Schools' Sports Zone

The country's first Schools' Sports Zone is being opened in Hurlingham Park, Fulham. The initiative inspired by Olympic silver medallist Roger Black will provide free and guaranteed access to a wide range of sports facilities for local schools. The zone includes two grass five-a-side pitches for football, rugby or hockey an all-weather pitch, three tennis courts, 100m running track and a sports pavilion with changing rooms.
The groundbreaking idea, which will become a model for the rest of the country, arose from an interview Roger Black conducted with the Leader of the Council, Cllr Stephen Greenhalgh, for a BBC Radio Four programme. The programme, Roger Black's Olympic Challenge, involved a project with Hurlingham & Chelsea School in which the athlete worked with a group of 12 year-olds to improve their health and fitness. Roger Black asked Cllr Greenhalgh what could be done to improve school sport in the borough - especially access to outdoor playing space – and the Schools' Sports Zone idea was born. Hurlingham Park has been chosen by H&F Council's residents' services department to pilot the initiative. Roger Black commented ‘Kids should be playing sport in the park, in an enclosed area in the fresh air.’ Cllr Greenhalgh said, ‘Most schools in our densely-populated borough have no playing fields and limited outdoor space for competitive sport and PE lessons. That's why I was impressed by Roger Black's idea to give schools better access to public parks. If this Schools' Sports Zone is successful, we will consider extending it to other parks in the borough.’
