Sutton was one of 18 boroughs taking part in the parade, watched by crowds of nearly half a million. The Mayor, Cllr Myfanwy Wallace, rode in a rickshaw at the head of the entry.

The lively Carshalton Cheerleaders entertained the crowds, members of the Sutton Cyclists Club rode their bikes, Sutton’s Eco-Local delivery bike took part, and there were even trees – the deputy Mayor, Cllr Brendan Hudson, among them! Local Guides and the Little League Players and their parents also joined in, and an enormous inflatable globe brought home the saving-the-planet message. Sutton’s entry was part of the Smarter Travel Sutton initiative with funding from the Mayor of London and Transport for London.

The Mayor received £1,000 as a special award for her charity POS (Parkinson’s Outreach in Sutton) to fund a Parkinson’s nurse in the borough in recognition of all the work that had gone into the innovative entry. The Mayoress, Mrs June Reid, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, also took part in the entry.
