This year, the Wimbledon Village Club celebrates its Cequenue Centenary (150 years). To commemorate the event, it is producing an anniversary booklet which will have an account of the Club’s history since its founding in 1858 by Rev F D Maurice, the pioneer of Christian Socialism and also the Vicar of St. Mary’s Wimbledon, who was ex officio President of the Club. And in fact, the current Vicar still holds that title.
The Club is holding a reception on 1 March, to which all the people who use the Club are invited. There will be a performance of Jack The Ripper by the Light Operatic Society. The guest list will include The Mayor of Merton, Stephen Hammond MP, and all the many organisations which use the adjacent hall including the Ballet class, Drama, Sunday School, Art class and Yoga.
Bob explained that their membership is still buoyant, whereas many other local clubs have recently found it difficult to sustain numbers. One of their greatest responsibilities is the maintenance of their building, which is listed. ‘We have recently commissioned contractors to do a complete overhaul of the site,’ he says. ‘That’s draining all our reserve funds but we are confident that it will sustain a valuable and historic building that is very much a part of old Wimbledon.’
