Over 600 competitors, from 25 countries, will be taking part in the 23rd Marathon des Sables. The race, which is the equivalent of completing five and a half consecutive marathons over six days, covers 151 miles (243 kilometres) and takes place between 27 March and 7 April, 2008. Competitors carry all their own kit in temperatures up to 120°Fahrenheit across uneven, rocky ground and sand dunes. A resident of Battersea, London SW11, since 2002, Tom is no stranger to physical exercise. He has run all over the world, competing mainly in triathlons and shorter distance events. However, this year’s Marathon des Sables will be a punishing first for him and, testing his fitness to the limit, he will rest for only four days before competing in the Flora London Marathon.
