Many people think that England will become a different place to live when it goes smoke-free on 1st July. Many smokers believe that it will deprive them of the right to enjoy themselves; other people consider that it is only a very small, selfish minority kicking up a fuss about it and when they take a long hard look at why they¹re upset about it, they will probably change their minds. Most smokers already know their lives will improve once the ban is in place and those that don¹t will be pleasantly surprised once they've acclimatised to the new legislation. How will it affect you?

T&L asked two local landlords how the changes would affect their businesses. Derek Lawson from the Alexandra in Wimbledon said: "Of course we are worried that it will reduce our trade but we have no option. We are planning to improve the sheltered accommodation on the roof garden and we hope to get an all-weather TV screen so clients can watch their favourite sport and still enjoy a cigarette whatever the weather." Charlie O'Toole, landlord of the Spotted Horse, Putney, told T&L: "We have been no-smoking since 26th May. If anything, it has improved our trade. We have a slightly different clientèle now that we have become a gourmet pub - I think we are attracting younger people. It is largely a question of re-educating people; if somebody lights up, I simply explain that we are no-smoking pub and they seem to accept it. After all, the planes, buses and trains are all non-smoking and they seem to have managed it. Why shouldn¹t we?"
