Sweater Style

Sweaters are having a fashion renaissance, providing all kinds of fabulous knitwear to get cosy in.

Here’s a guide to the best woollies around.

Anyone who devoured The Danish thriller The Killing will already have warmed to Gudrun and Gudrun, the Nordic knitwear design house (www.gudrungudrun.com). Its traditional line with the characteristic star pattern which was made famous by Sarah Lund, the protagonist detective, is currently its number one, best-selling jumper. Such is the power of a good cop!Take a browse through their website for more Nordic inspiration and work your look by adding a Nordic Sami bracelet – currently A-list celebrities’ favourite accessory (at T&L we predicted their take-off last year; try Greta Nord and Comfy Clogs for beautiful samis)!

Elsewhere, cable is proving a great cocoon this winter. There’s a snug chunky cable sweater at Theyskens’ Theory at Net-a-porter; Reiss has a wide-neck Tilly cable sweater; Jigsaw plays safe with cable knits in cosy cream and Autograph at M&S takes the classic cable and works it into a clever cape.

Layering is a key trend this season; work the look by indulging in some lightweight mohair which has a wonderful fuzzy texture. Brora’s v-neck sloppy Joe or Acne’s round neck at matches.com are other options. Embrace the colour blocking trend with contrasted sleeves or bodies - check out www.stylebymarina.com for an inspiring choice.

Pull the look together by layering up sloppy Joes over shirts and team with jeans, or throw on over a 40s style print dress. Rock the colour block trend teaming the look with skinny jeans or leather trousers. Two little tips to beat those winter blues!Watch out for Quantu Alpaca for unbelievably silky warmth and brilliant colours. And check out Louise Gray for Brora, the acclaimed Scottish designer. She has designed a cashmere capsule collection of vibrant colour blocked knits; my clear favourite is the marl sloppy Joe. The cashmere cable arm warmers are a close second - and one for my Christmas list, please!
