Celebrities are crazy for Rigby & Peller lingerie, finds Kitty Dwyer
Celebrity endorsements are the prize of the fashion business, so what greater accolade could the Queen’s corsetry supplier – Rigby & Peller - have than to find young style icons queuing up for their lingerie?
Following Lady Ga Ga’s shoot for her new music video which featured her
in Rigby & Peller underwear, much of the new collection was rushed back from the States for the launch of the a/w 2010 collection at Mayfair’s Sketch. Other fans of the brand include Stella McCartney, Sophie Dahl and Alexandra Burke.
And underwear as outerwear is the current big fashion story - so Rigby & Peller’s crossover market appeal has never been stronger.
Rigby & Peller was established in 1939 as a bespoke, made-to-measure service in Knightsbridge by Mrs Rigby and Mrs Peller. The current owner, June Kenton, was working for the firm when it came up for sale in the 1980s and managed to convince her husband Harold to buy the business. The Kentons have grown the company to include six London stores (at Knightsbridge, Mayfair and Chelsea - and also in Westfield, Brent Cross and Bluewater shopping centres aiming at the younger market) and one in Cambridge. Son David now runs the day-to-day-management of the firm, but June is still very much involved, visiting the stores and acting as key motivator and mentor for her fitters.

Rigby & Peller has added its own label to its lingerie collection and their ranges now include more youthful and sexier elements. Frilly ruffles and Madonnaesque coned bras and basques give a feel that is both retro but confident in its modern femininity. Shapewear has gone into the mainstream and is no longer something to hide, the 1940s/50s big pant look in satins and silks can be incredibly sexy.
Rigby & Peller is perhaps best known for its excellent fitters, all of whom are trained in store, on the job. As women, we are now used to hearing about the large percentage of us who are wearing the wrong size bra, so when I visited the Mayfair store I was well prepared for the worst! Their measuring service involves no tapes; size is assessed purely by the eye. Once in the fitting room my fitter, Beatriz, assessed my size with what felt like the merest glance and was off to find styles to suit my taste. Predictably my size was not as I had thought. Beatriz has judged me as having a smaller back and larger cup than I was accustomed to buying, but found me bras that complement style with good support. What I hadn’t expected was the way the fit would affect my posture and figure shape. A good fitting bra will naturally make you stand taller, feel slimmer and look more confident - absolutely worth its weight in gold.
