Andrew Morton’s furniture fits into your personal space and life
Andrew Morton has worked as a furniture designer for Heal’s, The Conran Shop and Habitat, and is often commissioned by architects and interior designers to furnish and finish their projects. While working with a third party brings rewards, Andrew found that he was missing the personal contact with the end user – that’s you and me. So, he set up his own business, initially working by himself out of a garage, designing and producing furniture for individuals. ‘I wanted to get back to working with people really, to talk to them about what they wanted and what their needs are, rather than hypothesising about what they might be or telling them what the latest trends are,’ he tells me. ‘As a designer you need to be able to make it yourself, rather than sitting at a drawing board. If you work hands on with the material and the client you have much more control and understanding.’
Responding to clients’ needs and wishes is key to Andrew, whether it’s creating new methods of storage for clutter or a new wardrobe that is bespoke for the room and the clothes it’s going to house – ‘a wardrobe you want to jump out of bed for’ as he puts it. He’s mindful of the fact that people just aren’t moving home as much as they used to. ‘Very often this might be your last home, or your second to last
home so you will want something that’s going to last and that fits your home and your life.’ Andrew’s worked locally for years too so he knows our properties - where space is often an issue - and he understands our tastes: whilst some clients want to keep architecturally sympathetic to their Victorian home, for example, others might want something completely avant garde.
‘We have no fixed ideas because everyone is different,’ he says. ‘Some people are not sure what they want, others are keen on an idea that might not work with their space or lifestyle. We can help and advise with every idea,’ he says, ‘And we can make it too. If you want it, we’ll make it for you’ he says. Interview by Sarah Hodgson
