New look for Epsom

scores over £2k The third St Raphael’s charity golf day, hosted by Time & Leisure, raised over £2,000 for the North Cheam hospice. Supported by Carshalton College, Audi Epsom, Surrey Banners and Surrey Inks, the day was judged a resounding success by all teams taking part, with Banstead solicitors Cuff & Gough scooping the overall winners’ award in the Stableford Competition. There was a hole-in-one to enjoy, too! Peter Ball of Platinum Kitchens, Stoneleigh, popping the ball straight into the eighth hole, reportedly after a very large Bailey’s and a massage! Marie Palmer, of Carshalton College – a member at the host Woodcote Park Golf Club – walked away with the women’s nearest the pin and longest drive awards; Peter Ball’s hole in one gave him the men’s nearest the pin prize and Stuart Marks of Jemca Toyota secured the longest drive award. Former St Raphael’s corporate fundraiser Chris Beynon hosted a charity auction and current corporate fundraiser, Sheelagh McCarthy compered proceedings.

health walks The long-established Epsom & Ewell Council- led Health Walks programme has begun a transformation into a newly-formed volunteer-led programme. Officers from the Council’s Leisure Developments team have been working with a number of walk leaders and other volunteers to make the group a self-sustaining activity. A Walks Committee has been formed, a constitution developed and a three year sponsorship contract with Epsom Downs Integrated Care Services (EDICS NHS) agreed. EDICS integrates healthcare for over 120,000 patients in the Epsom & Ewell, Banstead and Worcester Park areas and provides access from GP surgeries into more specialised care and activities.

Costume drama The Carshalton Pantomime Company Costume Department, which is run by volunteers and raises money for Children’s Charities, is in urgent need of a new home. The department is currently housed in premises on the Sutton Hospital site. However, the redevelopment of St Helier Hospital may result in some departments being moved to Sutton Hospital, with the likelihood that the Costume Department

will have to move. The Company provides a popular hire facility, providing a service to amateur and professional theatre companies, many schools (local and not so local) and the public in general. The Carshalton Pantomime Company itself and the Costume Department have been running for many years providing a service and entertainment and is recognised by many as being a true community project. If the move goes ahead it is likely to be in the near future. Jenny and David Barnfather, who run the costume department, have issued an urgent plea to anyone who can either help them find a new permanent home, or who could find storage for them in the short-term, if necessary. If no alternative is found the department may have to close.

Anyone who feels they can help should contact Jenny or David on 01737 813590. timeandleisure.co.uk . june 2011 . 9
