Ladies lead glamour parade for hospice The glamour of the catwalk came to Woodcote Park Golf Club, when Time & Leisure presented a Ladies’ Networking Lunch and Fashion Show in aid of St Raphael’s Hospice. The outfits, ranging from occasional wear through swimwear to evening gowns, were supplied by Carol Palmer of Riche, Ewell Village. Sheelagh McCarthy, Corporate Fundraiser at the hospice, joined the other volunteer models for the day: Karen Holt of Sutton’s Stay Active Every Day programme, Marie Palmer of Carshalton College, Sudi Ghahfarokhl of Sean Hanna and Tricia Dalton of Riche. The events team featured Sarah Weller, NatWest Bank’s Director of Business Banking in Sutton and Kingston and head of the bank’s Women in Business programme for London and the South East. ‘Don’t be too scared to ask about finance,’ was her message to lady entrepreneurs. ‘Women can be more cautious than men when starting a business and we have specially trained advisers available to support them to fulfil their ambitions’.
Dame Jacqueline issues reading challenge
Kingston children’s author, Dame Jacqueline Wilson is inviting youngsters to take part in a special reading challenge, to benefit Tadworth-based charity The Children’s Trust. The aim of the Big Book Challenge is to encourage them to read as many books as possible during the summer break. Friends and family can sponsor them to raise money for the Trust, a national charity which supports some of the UK’s most profoundly disabled children.

£790,000 boost for
Carshalton museum The fund to restore Honeywood Museum has been boosted to more than £790,000. The Heritage Lottery Fund has announced it will award the project another £301,000, which will allow more rooms and features to be renovated and opened to the public. Sutton Council bid for the extra money to further transform the Grade II listed building, which is currently undergoing an overhaul. The extra grant money will allow remedial work to be carried out on damp found during the initial work.
Have a say in saving North Cheam hospice
gardens spruced up The gardens at St Raphael’s Hospice have been spruced up, after a team of volunteers from NatWest Private Banking in south London, gave up a day to work there. The work was carried out with a £1,190 donation from Natwest which paid for £490 of shrubs and garden tools, with the balance donated to the hospice. Volunteers planted shrubs and perennials, supplied by Woodcote Green Nursery, which also donated £100.
council money Residents in Epsom & Ewell only have a few days left to respond to the council’s, Your Money, Your Voice new budget consultation, giving local people a say on how the council should make savings of at least £1.5 million over the next three years. Epsom technician dresses Beyoncé
Two days after her triumphant Glastonbury performance, mega-star Beyoncé took to the stage in Paris wearing a dress made by a member of staff from Epsom University for the Creative Arts. Valentina Elizabeth (pictured), a Fashion Technician at Epsom for more than two decades, was rushed to the studio of designer Julien Macdonald after one of his staff was involved in an accident. Valentina, 47, said: ‘Making a dress for Beyoncé has to be one of the highlights of my career. I could not believe I was actually making something for one of the biggest stars in the world.’
Sprinter Joey lifts Sutton pupils

Olympic hopeful Joey Duck took time out of her gruelling training schedule to coach budding athletes at Robin Hood Junior School in Sutton. The 21-year-old sprinter, who has already represented Great Britain, held an assembly for the youngsters and answered their questions about her sprinting career, before taking them outside for a training session. Her visit coincided with National School Sports Week.
