Gary Wilmot, Kellie Shirley, Elliot Harper and Jenny Eclair on sparkling form

Cinderella, he is being fitted for his trousers. Apparently they are too tight. I find I can say nothing. Elliot loves playing Prince Charming, describing the role as ‘a great part, a straight part, he’s a nice guy and everyone loves him’. He says he’d like, one day, to play someone old and ugly like a Dame or an Ugly Sister. Not in the immediate future, Elliot!

The stars of Cinderella are in high spirits, finds Sarah Hodgson

hen I meet Elliot Harper, the handsome actor who plays Prince Charming in Richmond Theatre’s panto

You will no doubt remember Kellie Shirley who plays Cinders, as Carly Wicks from EastEnders. Kellie tells me she relishes panto because ‘you are involving the audience, getting the kids up on stage, that’s its charm’. Tiny and very pretty, Kellie loves playing Cinderella because she’s perpetually young, but hopes that ‘maybe next time I’ll get to play a baddie’. She also loves being blonde. As Snow White in previous pantos, she had dark hair – ‘I love changing my appearance,’ she says. Kellie lives in Peckham where she is a neighbour of co-star Fairy Godmother Jenny Eclair, so watch out for plenty of camaraderie between Cinders and her Fairy Godmother. Jenny warns us – ‘I’m very bad with props. They’ll have to have about 42 wands for me. I’ll lose them or leave them in the lavatory. I can’t dance. They could be in for a shock. And I can’t sing either. I wonder if I told them that.’

Buttons is played by musical star Gary Wilmot, whose debut role in Me and My Girl earned him terrific critical acclaim. Gary told me - ‘I love Buttons because he’s funny. The point is to get the kids to like him, and the story does that. He is in love with Cinders and he saves the day. I always remember that actors should act for the audience - in this case for the kids - and not for themselves.’ t&l
