Kingston Arts’ Festival of the Voice celebrates local vocal riches

pianist Benjamin Costello, this year’s events – over 20 in all – are aimed at catering for the widest variety of musical tastes, with key themes of Greek Mythology, Heroes and Heroines and the build-up to the 2012 Olympic Games. As ever, there is an emphasis on high quality performance, with the recently refurbished St Andrew’s Church in Surbiton assuming the role of the festival’s ‘home’ - where you can hear Kingston’s schools perform with BBC Choir of the Year’s Ken Burton.

‘We are delighted to be presenting two new festival commissions, this year,’ said Benjamin Costello. ‘Kingston Arts has commissioned a number of works by local composers since 2006, and this year we will be premiering pieces by William Morris and Kevin Jones.’

William’s setting of stanzas from Milton’s The Hymn to Christ’s Nativity, will be sung by the choir of Hampton Court Chapel, under Carl Jackson’s direction, at Festival Choral Evensong on 20 November; Jones’ Internal Harmony – three settings of words by Victorian poet George Meredith for countertenor and piano – will be premiered by Robin Blaze and Benjamin Costello at St Andrew’s on 23 November.

The opening festival concert will feature the Thames Philharmonic Choir and Thames Festival Orchestra in All Saints Parish Church on 19 November. The period instruments of the Sinfonia Britannica support a star-studded cast of singers at the Rose on 20 November, and Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah will be sung by Kingston Choral Society in All Saints on 26 November. Other events to look out for include Laine Theatre Arts students singing Songs from the Shows in the Eden Walk Shopping Centre on 12 and 17 November. The students will also be on hand when Kingston’s Christmas lights are switched on at the main entrance to John Lewis on 17 November.

Kingston Arts continues to deliver artistic excellence in the Royal borough, thanks to the support of key sponsor John Lewis Kingston and a number of other major supporters, including Time & Leisure! t&l
