When did you start your business – and why?
After working from home (my kitchen!) for more than a year, I wanted to give my clients a proper relaxing salon experience and so the salon opened in September 2006.
What is special about your business?
We have a great team of stylists that make every client’s experience special. Elements such as a glass of wine or a coffee after a relaxing scalp massage (even for the guys) makes a visit to Doyer and Doyer more than just a trip to the salon.
How has running your own business affected your life?
It has been a fantastic experience that has given me the flexibility to start a family and still be involved in the business. I’m able to manage my own time and plan the day around my little girl.
What have been the high - and low – points of your enterprise?
We’ve competed in a number of national hairdressing competitions and recently made it to the finals of the Redken NYC Colour Awards – definitely a high for all of us! A low point was when the ceiling in the salon collapsed due to a water leak in the flat above the salon – it was total chaos with dust and dirt all over the place!
What tips would you pass on to others thinking of starting up on their own?
Involve a solicitor before signing any contracts. Be realistic when making sales forecasts. Celebrate achievements and victories along the way and get the right people in your team – that will make the journey so much easier!
