Why did you get into your business?

Whilst at school I was required to undertake work experience in a local council office. It turned out to be the legal department. While all my school friends were making tea and doing the photocopying, my role was to go to Court as bag carrier for various solicitors. On one particular occasion, the Judge turned to me and required that I book various appointments that were connected with the case. I had to leave the Court and attend the Issue Office but I was too scared to say I was simply on work experience. Of course it all went sadly wrong, but I obtained a huge buzz, and it certainly beat the photocopying that my friends were doing for the same two weeks!

What is special about your company?

The people. I know it’s a cliché but in our case it’s true. Everyone here is really committed to doing their best for each client. We have a fantastic skillset that enables us to serve our clients well, having all progressed through different paths including city law firms and other inhouse legal advisers.

Being a smaller firm we really do work together as a team on many projects, particularly when clients have overlapping matters. And it’s not just the staff, we are fortunate that we have some of the nicest, most interesting clients to work with who really do make it all worthwhile.

How do you manage your work - life balance?

It can be testing at times. Simple thing such as sitting down for supper together are hugely important, but being organised and having a support system in place I can usually arrange matters so that my home life is independent of the office. Also, my blackberry and remote access allows me to work anywhere when faced with urgent matters and deadlines.

What have been the high and low points?

I don’t have time for low points!

What tips would you pass on to others thinking of starting up on their own?

Be organised and take time out for you! Most importantly, do something you enjoy.
