9 to 5 the musical, based on the 1980s film starring Dolly Parton, opens at New Wimbledon Theatre 22- 27th Oct.
The musical will feature several famous faces, including Ben Richards, Natalie Casey and Bonnie Langford. We caught up with Bonnie to find out all about it.
Bonnie describes her character: ‘I play Roz the office supervisor and I’m the busy body. I’m just this person who is lusting after the boss.’ Bonnie has been in musicals since she was 6 and is more than experienced on the circuit, so I wondered what drew her to 9 to 5:
‘I’m doing 9 to 5 the musical because it’s a great fun show; Dolly Parton has written a terrific score. The story is about three women who work in an office 9 to 5, hence the title. It follows very closely to the film, and it’s about these three women in this office which is very regimented like they were in those days. It’s very much a period piece.
‘Their boss is a bit of a chauvinist – he’s really not very nice. The only person who likes him is me – my character Roz – who has lustful thoughts which are completely unrequited. But [the play] is really about the three ladies and how they get the better of their boss and make things better for women in general.’
Having played in London for many years Bonnie has worked frequently in Wimbledon and knows the area well: ‘I’ve worked in Wimbledon many times, I like Wimbledon Village and the theatre is lovely, it’s a home from home really.'
Bonnie says working with such a young cast is a lot of fun and cannot wait for the show to open. So if you’re a fan of the film, or just a lover of musicals, go check out 9 to 5, opening at New Wimbledon Theatre 22 Oct.
