It’s a really special week for my husband and I as I’ve received the quartz and marble samples for the kitchen and he’s started watching the football again!
T-Minus 15 weeks.
15 weeks until we move back into the house!! I really can’t believe I’m typing this. When I say this house is basically being rebuilt from the ground up, it’s honestly the truth.
We have had a delay on windows but luckily the builders carried on with other areas. The windows really have been worth the wait! Floor to ceiling windows have been my dream, along with bay windows, since I was a little girl. Also, winning the lottery! I guess two out of three isn’t too bad, I still have time to win the lotto and boy do I need it with all the Pinterest buys waiting in my basket.
I have been looking at kitchens and it amazes me how different the price can be for a standard mdf door! We are now finalising designs. To be honest, I really wanted to jump on the grey bandwagon but feel it’s a bit late and actually loving all the neutral earth tones with a mix of marble! I do love a statement so I’ve ordered an AGA Rangemaster in black with gold buttons! Slightly over the top but my brief for the house is looking like ‘minimalist with a touch of Kanye West’.
As we get closer to the finishing date, things change. We have had to think fast and change layouts. The bathroom has changed three times and hopefully we are on to a winner. The boiler was originally in the loft but has now been moved which has worked as a plus because copper has gone up and longer pipes mean more money.
Tips
- Talking of range cookers… If you want to purchase one before you die, I’d order now. The wait times are a year on some of the most popular designs! We have been lucky to get one on time.
- To save costs on your kitchen because, let’s face it, it’s the most expensive room in the house, I would buy things separately. We are buying the units and marble worktops from two different places. The worktops are coming in direct from the actual supplier. And the door knobs are being sourced elsewhere until I decide on colour.
- Flooring. Get as many samples and work out your depth of flooring before screeding starts, if you want this to be one level throughout.
- We are having underfloor heating which is a big expense but saves space on radiators and will keep us toasty in the winter. However the flooring has to be special engineered wood to cope with the heating which is a lot more than normal flooring! (Of course it’s would be). Oh yes, and surprise surprise, the wood has gone up too! So shop around.
