With National Barbecue Week upon us this month (28 May – 3 June) it’s time to think bigger than the humble burger. Take inspiration from some of our local eateries who excel at all things barbecue, smoky flavours and charcoal-inspired cuisine.

Meat Up Grill, Wandsworth
This restaurant is about ‘a little social grilling’, from its small plates to its steaks. Share a five-hour smoked, grilled and BBQ-glazed pork belly rib, dig into a fireroasted tenderstem broccoli salad, or feast on its 24-hour-marinated, slow-smoked and maple-glaze beef short rib.

Holy Smoke, Wimbledon Park
When you have a changing menu that offers starters such as vodka-flamed chicken livers in tomato and fresh chilli on toasted baguette, followed by the Holy Smoke hand-chopped steak burger with smoked Monterey Jack cheese accompanied by smoky frites, you know you’ve found a restaurant with a sound knowledge of the barbecue style.

Roxie Steak Wimbledon, Putney, Earlsfield
Roxie Steak opened in Wimbledon last month and this neighbourhood restaurant fully embraces all things barbecue! Butchers’ cuts of meat are on the menu and, if you’re looking to share a dish, check out its Cue Sharing Platter, a carnivore’s paradise of half rack of ribs, slow- cooked smoky BBQ brisket, pulled pork, boerewors, and fillet, ribeye and sirloin medallions.

2016 Riesling, Marlborough, Hunter’s £11.95
Intense and exuberantly fruity, but with a clean, dry finish, this would be an excellent partner for marinated mackerel or sardines.

2016 Tannat Sin Barrica, Montevideo, Bouza Bodega Boutique £15.95
Intense layers of blackberry, cassis and mulberry, with a smoky undertone - well matched to a rare to medium-rare steak.

2016 Cuvee Clarendon Rose, Cotes de Provence, Domaine Gavoty £16.95
Packed with crushed summer fruits, creamy texture and a long crisp finish. Perfect with chargrilled garlicky skewers of veg.

Looking for a sweet summer treat you can enjoy without the guilt? We’ve discovered a couple of ice creams that will do the trick. Oppo ice cream is made from cold-pressed, wild harvested virgin coconut oil, stevia leaf and fresh milk, and comes in at between 37 and 43 calories per scoop. And Breyers, which uses fresh cream and stevia, and is high in protein, has launched in the UK, coming in at 290-350 calories per tub.

World Whisky Day falls on 19 May and, last year, was celebrated in 47 different countries. Join in the celebrations at our local pubs and enjoy their collections.

Earl Spencer, Southfields
Built in the Edwardian era and now a gastropub, it’s all about Scotch whisky here – choose from ten whiskies from some of Scotland’s finest distilleries, as well as blended scotch of Haig ‘Single Grain’ and Famous Grouse.

The Crane, Wandsworth
Those who are fans of single malt whisky will find an excellent choice between Talisker, Port Ruighe, Glenfiddich 18-year old, and Lagavulin 16-year-old on offer at The Crane, officially the oldest pub in Wandsworth.

Fire Stables, Wimbledon Village
Broadening out to Japanese whisky? The Fire Stables serves Hibiki Japanese Harmony as well as a selection of Scottish favourites and American bourbons.
