Art Deco

Art Deco design is one of the most appealing and enduring aesthetics around. The name was derived from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925, and is both bold and elegant.

There are several ways to channel the look – for inspiration, head to luxury interiors show Decorex International at Syon Park this month, with Art Deco a big theme for 2018. Or try a local antiques store for some gems from the 1920s and 1930s.

MIRROR, MIRROR
Art Deco calls for plenty of reflective surfaces, whether that be in grand fantail mirrors or furniture.

WOOD WORKS
Polished woods and inlaid woods formed part of the look. Think parquet flooring and sleek cabinetry.

CURVE BALL
Think rounded elegant furniture with simple lines for Art Deco style. Curved bodies atop angular legs are a key look.

THE COCKTAIL HOUR
Cocktails made the 1920s swing. You’ll need a drinks trolley, of course, and all the necessary barware.

ACCESSORISE WITH STYLE
Wallpaper, perfume bottles, vases and even placemats can add a touch of Deco if you want to simply include a nod to the trend. Popular Art Deco motifs referenced the discovery of the Pyramids in Egypt, animal prints, nude figures zigzags, and sunbursts.
