Pregnancy Fitness

As the summer months slowly and tentatively go by, we’ve started to think more about the outdoors and getting in shape.

I guess many others will be doing the same with trips abroad being booked and school holidays fast approaching. Who doesn’t want to look good when the sun’s out and more flesh is on show, wherever you may be! There’ll be no holiday for us this year as we prepare for our second child, but it doesn’t mean there are no plans to get fit afterwards for either of us. Michael has used my pregnancies to eat for three and I’ll want to shift my baby weight in a healthy sensible way.

Living in Surrey we are spoilt for choice with so many outdoor activities to get involved in. There are walks in Richmond Park, days out at Box Hill or crazy golf in Stoke Park amongst other things we love to do. Nice leisurely days out with the children is great way of getting out of the house and into the fresh air. Now I know it isn’t easy to get to a gym with the brood in tow, it can often be the last thing you want to do after cooking meals, washing clothes and entertaining the children, but it does get those endorphins flowing. Luckily our local Virgin Active has a crèche which makes it so much easier to squeeze in an hour session. Michael has been getting into his spinning classes (it took some persuasion) and another activity I’ve invested in during the pregnancy is Pilates. It’s just a short walk down the road for me and you’d be surprised how it gets the muscles working.

Not everyone has the space or finances to have a gym at home or even able to hire a personal trainer. However, if you have selfdiscipline there are some great DVDs on the market and I’ve even tried the Just Dance series. I’ve also been investigating exercise bikes that you can hire for a period of time.

At the end of the day for us it’s important to feel fit and healthy but at the same time it’s also nice to have a treat too! This summer we want to look good but definitely won’t be giving up on a cheeky Mr Whippy! Have fun!
