Top Running Tips for Beginners

You’ve decided you want to start running. Maybe you’d like to lose weight, or get fitter, or maybe your friend signed you up for a 10k race in a few months. Whatever the reason, your first run can seem a bit daunting. Here at Sporting Feet, we’ve put together a little guide to help you get started.

  1. Get the right kit. While it might be very tempting to get a cheap pair of trainers just in case running isn’t for you, it’s not going to do you any favours. Being in the wrong shoe greatly increases your chance of getting injured, and that’s hardly what you need when you’re just getting into it. Instead, make sure you get fitted properly in some good quality shoes with the right level of support. Click here for more information about choosing the right shoe.
  2. Running apps are an amazing tool. ‘Couch to 5k’ or something similar will help you stay motivated, get you into a good weekly routine, give you something to work towards and start you off with a nice walk/run workout. You’ll gradually increase the distance you run, rather than feeling horrible after trying to run a mile non-stop on your first try.
  3. Don’t think of rest days as lazy days, they’re a crucial part of your training! It’s important to allow your body to recover and repair, so make sure you schedule in a few rest days a week.
  4. Warm up and cool down. This is very important as a way of reducing the risk of injury while you’re out on your run.
  5. If you do pick up any injuries, don’t make it worse by trying to running through it. Rest can help, but seek advice from a physio or doctor if it persists.
  6. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before and after your run.
  7. Enjoy yourself! Find new, interesting routes to run, get an awesome playlist together or go running with a friend. And enjoy that sense of accomplishment when you’ve finished.
