It’s that time of year as we dust down those pinstriped jackets and head down to the Thames to watch the most prestigious university race in rowing. Marking almost two centuries of age-old waterside tradition, the Boat Race starts at Putney Bridge and twists its way to Mortlake where crowds are packed on the banks to watch the final push across the finish line. Each year, the event lures thousands of families, rowing enthusiasts, not to mention a young crowd keen for any excuse for a Thames-side Pimm’s or two.
The White Hart, Barnes
To celebrate the boat race, the White Hart in Barnes will be hosting a BBQ and live music from the Monday Night Reruns sure to keep the party going throughout the day. The pub offers a splendid location right on the banks of the Thames with views from the terrace, and so is the ultimate location so as not to miss a second of all the sporting action.
The Half Moon, Putney
The much-loved Putney pub known for being a premier south west London live music venue will be hosting a special day devoted to all things Boat Race so you can get your fill of the ultimate riverside sporting event of the year. There will be big screens so you can catch all of the action, and rock cover band The Maida Vales will be performing a three-hour set.

Duke’s Head, Putney
This riverside local will be putting on a live soul band on the main floor, plus for the party people keen to see the festivities out to the bitter end, there will be a DJ in the rowing bar that will continue into the night. With an idyllic location, the Boat Race crowds spill out along the riverfront and the friendly Putney pub always serves up a convivial race day atmosphere.
The Arab Boy, Putney
This historical pub is a cosy getaway from the hum of the High Street and the riverside bustle. The bar is made up of an open plan room and quaint beer garden and visitors can enjoy a special boat day fizz or opt for a Pimm’s with jugs flowing throughout the day.
The Blue Boat, Fulham
The large hostelry is situated right on the riverbank and will have a selection of al fresco bars outside to keep the crowds topped up with SipSmith gins and Frontier beers. There will also be a BBQ and a set three-course meal on offer.
