The Perfect Race Day Dresses As Worn By Vogue Williams
Epsom Derby Festival ambassador Vogue Williams shows how combining vintage with high street can give you a look that will make you stand out from the crowd. Take a look at these amazing race day dresses…
Ladies’ Day and Derby Day at the world-famous Epsom Races is a spectacular fashion event which is attended by celebrities and royalty and is one that model and TV personality Vogue Williams is a keen supporter of. She returns as the Derby Festival ambassador this year, as well as judge for the coveted Style Award for Ladies’ Day on 31 May – where the winner will win a luxury trip for four people to Paris as well as a year’s worth of dresses from ChiChi London and a bespoke hat by Jessica Rea Millinery.
“I’m really excited to see everyone’s looks. I’ll be searching for the most well put together race day dresses, from the headwear right down to the shoes,” says Vogue of her scouting mission. “I’m incredibly excited about the day; it’s so much fun from the moment you arrive.”
Race Day Dress Code
Being one of the biggest summer events of the season, it goes without saying that the Epsom Derby provides ample opportunity to wear something special from couture race day dresses to alternative looks. And, even though Ladies’ Day requires that women wear a fascinator or hat in the Queens Stand and men to be in a jacket, collar and tie, attire can be fairly relaxed which means there is room for expressing style without being too formal. However, rules are slightly stricter on Derby Day – ladies must wear a ‘formal day dress’ or trouser suit with a hat or a ‘substantial fascinator’, while gentlemen must wear either grey or black morning dress with a top hat, service dress or full national costume.
This year it’s all about mixing and matching high-street with vintage pieces as stylist Sarah Kate Byrne demonstrates in choosing affordable items that make an impact. “Vintage fashion works particularly well in the race day environment as it can really elevate an occasion wear look and ensure you stand out from the crowd. The opportunity to style Vogue using pre-loved treasures mixed with fantastic high street finds was too good to miss.”
Meanwhile, don’t be afraid to accessorise your outfit – more is more, and opt for more fluid and longer hemlines – this will be more comfortable throughout the day. Also experiment with colour; but if block colours aren’t your thing, choose a bold print or pattern to make a statement, instead.
