Violin starlet’s Beethoven debut

Joo Yeon Sir comes to Wimbledon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Research

Joo Yeon Sir, the prize-winning 24-year- old Korean-born violinist, plays the Beethoven Violin Concerto for the first time with the Wimbledon Symphony Orchestra, later this month. The all- Beethoven concert is in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief.

Joo Yeon began playing in public at the age of five – as a pianist! By the age of seven, though, she had fallen in love with the violin and a year later she played her first concerto with an orchestra. At nine, her parents brought her to London and she started studying at the Purcell School.

She knew, then, that the violin and composing music would be her life and more so when she met ‘the teacher of her dreams,’ Dr Felix Andrievsky. ‘He is the one’, she says, ‘who has taught me everything I know about music – and life.’

His strong-mindedness about what Joo Yeon should – and should not – play makes her performance of the Beethoven in Wimbledon a very special occasion because it will be her very first performance of this great work. ‘I always dreamed of playing the Beethoven but I was not allowed to touch it until two years ago, when my teacher gave me permission to have a look. I can’t tell you how happy I was - finally, being allowed to touch the holy Beethoven and even happier when I received an invitation to perform it with the WSO!’

Age 4-18

Fun, educational, confidence-building classes in acting, singing and dance.

QUALITY TRAINING

ESTABLISHED 1988

In fact, the concert will start a 2015 feast of Beethoven for her. She is performing all ten Beethoven sonatas with ten different Royal College of Music pianists throughout the spring and summer. You can see her perform the famous Kreutzer Sonata on YouTube. In late November 2014 Joo Yeon won £4,000 and the chance to record a piece for broadcast on Classic FM after coming first in the highly competitive Arts Club Karl Jenkins Classical Musical Award.

The Wimbledon concert will also feature the Coriolan Overture and the eighth symphony. Robin Browning conducts. t&l
