SKYLIGHT REVIEW

Skylight review

Fabulous view and fantastic menu – what more could one ask for?

Nestled in the heart of Peckham and just a stone’s throw from the bus station is a real gem for London foodies: The Skylight. Overlooking the city skyline (and a bunch of tower cranes), you could enjoy a romantic sunset here sharing a dinner of roast beef on sourdough toast and Marmite mayo or perhaps Indian five-spiced roasted butternut squash. Equally, it makes a great spot for meeting a friend for brunch, as I did. Whatever time you pop in, you’ll find locally-sourced food served on small and big platters, accompanied by a fabulous selection of drinks and cocktails created by the in-house mixologist, Sebastian Hollingworth.

The dining area inside feels comfortable, but it’s the terrace that’s the real star of the venue, with its amazing views.

While perusing the menu, we enjoyed some elegant cocktails (bellini and breakfast martini, to be precise). They are beautifully – yet simply – served and taste fantastic.

Charred asparagus with hot smoked trout sounded delicious so that is what my companion and I settled on. It was soft and fresh, and pretty well seasoned – a perfect early Saturday brunch, really. Skylight’s brunch menu looks overall very impressive: from burrata with Tropea onions and smoked aubergine to cinnamon-spiced banana French toast, it boasts crisp and smooth tastes and stylish looks.

As we still had a bit of space for a treat, we went for pastries. And what a good decision it was! Slightly warm, the cinnamon roll was perfectly fluffy with crisp sugar crystals, and the chocolate pastry literally melted in my mouth.

The service was truly excellent, – friendly, warm and professional, though admittedly we waited for our order a tad long, which was perhaps the only blip of the otherwise amazing afternoon. Skylight has a fantastic ambience too – modern and hip, yet tranquil and relaxing I can imagine all sorts of pleasant social activities to take place there, from birthday and hen parties to romantic dinner dates.
