Gordon’s School, built over a century ago at the express wish of Queen Victoria as the national monument to General Gordon, is listed as one of Britain’s outstanding schools by Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector.

A non-selective, co-educational residential and day boarding school, Gordon’s School is in the top 1% of all schools in England and Wales for progress at A Level. However, the School’s ethos is that a good education is not just about outstanding examination results but a thorough preparation for life; it is about providing opportunities and experiences for all young people to find their talents and interests, develop good character, become accomplished and achieve across a range of disciplines and ultimately develop the confidence to go and make their mark in the world.

It’s not just the classrooms where students excel. Successes are achieved in drama; the arts; debating; public speaking; dance and sport.

Set in some 50 acres of wooded parkland in Surrey, with outstanding facilities and just a short drive or train journey from London, Gordon’s is home to some 900 students.

There are three main admission points – at 11 and 13 years old and for Sixth Form. All students benefit from an extended school day, running until 7.30pm every week day with sport on Saturday mornings. The additional time at school enables students to participate in the extensive co-curricular programme, which offers over 50 activities every day. In addition, they can have supper at school and attend supervised prep.

Students are attracted to the Sixth Form by the range of academic options and co-curricular activities as well as extensive next steps advice, help with revision and applying to universities. Over 90 per cent of the school’s Sixth Formers reach their chosen destination after A Levels.

A comprehensive careers programme includes industry speakers from a range of professions; psychometric testing; meetings with a dedicated careers advisor; apprenticeship speakers and gap year companies.  Higher education presentations are made by university advisors from the UK and overseas. In addition there is specialist medic and Oxbridge support.

Last year the school announced its partnership with Harlequins to provide a pathway for promising rugby players. The game-changing initiative – a first for Harlequins and Gordon’s – enables rugby players aged between 16 and 18 years old, to train in an environment similar to that of a professional club, whilst receiving a first class education.

Gordon’s provides the opportunity for all to be the best they can be through academic enrichment programmes and extended projects; opportunities to give back through charitable functions and the chance to experience the thrill of outdoor pursuits through CCF and Duke of Edinburgh Award schemes.

A unique feature is the 50 strong pipes and drums band which brings Whitehall to a standstill every year for the school’s annual Parade to the statue of General Gordon by the Thames.

The school is the only one permitted to march along the central London venue – and commemorating General Gordon’s life has been an integral part of the School’s history. To date, the school continues to have the reigning sovereign as its patron and keeps up the tradition of marching, which is undertaken in ceremonial Blues.

The real judgement of Gordon’s is the students. Visitors are struck by the friendliness, discipline and vibrancy throughout the school and by the family atmosphere, exemplified by the special rapport between staff and students. This is borne from a community that strives to live with integrity, to be courteous, enthusiastic and diligent, even in adversity.
