TOP TAPAS BY THE RIVER AT HIDEAWAY ON THAMES DITTON MARINA
Top image: Hideaway riverside terrace.
Hideaway is aptly named, being tucked away in a marina that not many seem to know about. It has a fine view of the river and is just the place to head to for a cocktail as the sun sets. There’s a holiday vibe with festoon lights over the veranda and a happy buzz about the place.
This is the latest restaurant venture from husband and wife team Sam and Alex Berry, who are behind the excellent No 97 in Surbiton, One One Four in Teddington, and Cento Uno, also Surbiton, and the couple have already pulled off an incredible feat in that each restaurant has a completely different identity but retain impeccable service and cooking across them all. I had high hopes for Hideaway and wasn’t disappointed.
The menu is predominantly tapas, along with a couple of burger options. We settled in with cocktails (I can recommend the Hideaway Sunset) while munching on delicious arancini (crunchy on the outside, meltingly gooey within) as we perused the menu.

There’s a mix of crowd-pleasers – mac cheese with pulled pork, calamari, patatas bravas – alongside seafood specials such as octopus and hake.
I can’t resist hake if it’s ever a menu option and this was fabulous, topped with a flavoursome sauce of tiny brown shrimps and salsa verde – greedily I could have eaten more. The grilled octopus was tender and utterly delicious. We also tried the mac cheese – fabulous but rich so be warned!
Service was great and the atmosphere fun. Sam and Alex have done it again – they have a knack of matching the menu to the vibe they want to create and to the surroundings. Hideaway is another fabulous addition to the fold.
