How to Create Your Very Own Festive Outdoor Cinema

Bring the fun of the theatre home this Christmas

From ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol’ to ‘Home Alone’ and even ‘E.T.’, who doesn’t love a good film or two during the holiday season? Thanks to Wayfair, we’re bringing the fun of theatre home with these expert tips on how to create your very own festive outdoor cinema. Think freshly made popcorn, Christmas decor, mulled wine and lit-up reindeers galore.

Making Christmas

Start by setting up either a pop up or permanent gazebo to protect viewers from the elements. A permanent gazebo model is likely to include a floor that helps to withstand more extreme weather conditions, but as long as your gazebo is waterproof – anything goes! Be sure to add some festive garlands, a few baubles and fairy lights for extra effect.

Layer Up

To keep your cinema nice and toasty, layer a few outdoor rugs on the ground. Outdoor rugs are pretty much immune to the outdoors and can be reused during summer for picnics. They also provide the ideal base for giant bean bag chairs, pouffes and stylish pillows. Add some thick blankets for even more comfort.

Beat the Brrrr

If bundling up in blankets and faux fur isn’t enough, then keep everybody nice and warm with an outdoor heater or propane fire pit. The tantalising glow from the flames also helps to bring a natural light to your cinema set up. Just remember to keep your heater or fire pit a good distance from flammable items and ensure that your gazebo is open at the sides or back and always fully ventilated.

Christmassy Cocktails

Have yourself a very merry Christmas by stocking up a drinks trolley with festive treats. Serve hot drinks like mulled wine or a Christmassy cocktail or opt for hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and marshmallows. But the must-have for a proper movie night? Freshly made popcorn (salty or sweet).

The Big Switch On

Recreate a starry-night by adorning your outdoor cinema with sparkling fairy lights. Light nets and curtains are great for covering larger surfaces. For a more winter wonderland feel, add some novelty lit-up reindeers. After all, there is no such thing as too much when it comes to fairy lights.
