Combat the effects of summer on your hair with these post-summer beauty hacks

Combat the effects of sun, sea, and swimming pools with these post-summer beauty fixes

Holidays may be restorative for mind and soul but they can play havoc with your beauty regime. If your skin, hair and nails are feeling parched and in need of rescue, use these expert tips, tricks and post-summer beauty products to get you feeling your best again.

Skin Soothers

Long flights, late nights and blissful days out in the sunshine can leave your skin tired, dull and prone to breakouts. Try to drink up to three litres of water a day and get a few early nights to start your skin recovery.

Ideal for dehydrated or damaged skin, serums deliver a more potent dose of hydration because they are lighter and are more easily absorbed.

Invest in hydrating skincare products infused with vitamin C, which not only gives you great antioxidant protection but also improves skin firmness. If your skin has lost radiance, retinol will help boost collagen production, brighten skin and will aid elasticity. For intense hydration, hyaluronic acid helps to plump, hydrate and smooth the skin.

While spring is often the time attention turns to toning and firming, it should really be a year-round priority. Opt for brightening, smoothing product such as Mio’s range as putting in the good work now will pay dividends when the Christmas party season comes around.

In the Salon

A postholiday facial can be just the boost your skin needs. Gina Conway of Gina Conway Aveda Salons and Spas recommends the Murad Core 60 minute facial, which is available at Elys Urban Beauty. The facial hydrates and helps soothe and inject moisture into the skin.

Nailed It

Give your nails a well-deserved moistureboosting treat. Massage your cuticles every night with a small amount of cuticle oil enriched with vitamin E to promote healthy new growth and invest in a nourishing, organic hand cream, which will keep your paws hydrated through autumn and winter. Book in for a nail therapy treatment that includes gentle exfoliation, a nourishing hand or foot mask and hot oil therapy to restore hydration and softness to the skin.

Tips and Treatments

Breakage, discolouration, dry ends and frizzy, lifeless hair… the summer can really take its toll on your locks.

Olaplex is an excellent choice to help rebuild hair strength and condition and is a three-step process, with two products applied in the salon and the third used at home once a week.

Using an oil to hydrate the ends of the hair is also vital, says hairdresser Edward James. “My personal favourite oil to use is the Aveda leave in dry oil (Dry Remedy Oil), however, even using a couple of drops of almond oil on damp hair every time you wash it will improve the condition substantially in the long-term. The Aveda Intensive Moisture Mask – Dry Remedy Series is also a great at-home treatment.” If you’re worried about the stripping and damaging effects of Brazilian blow dries but want smooth and manageable hair, check out the new tranche of gentler frizz-taming hair treatments. The British Blowdry, available at Edward James salons, is ammonia free and adds moisture and shine to your hair. “It also resurfaces the ends of your hair which are likely to have been affected by the hot and humid summer weather,” explains Edward.
