Ed Davy MP Supports initiative to Close Digital Divide in Kingston Schools
A local initiative called Keep Kids Connected who refurbish old unwanted laptops to give to local children who need one, has received the support of local MP, Ed Davy. On Thursday 10th June, Mr Davy took receipt of 10 refurbished laptops on behalf of Hollyfield School in Kingston. These laptops will be given to children in the school who do not have access to a device on which to engage in their online learning.
Ed Davy said
“Keep Kids Connected is inspirational and exactly what the community needs now. If you have a spare laptop hanging around please let them have it – it could change a child’s life”
The current Covid 19 lockdown has highlighted the fact that many children in Kingston have no access to a device on which to engage in their distance learning and Keep Kids Connected wants to help close that digital divide. KKC collects donations of good condition laptops, erases the hard disk data and essentially turns the device into a Chromebook and then delivers it to schools who have identified children who need them.
To date KKC has delivered nearly 100 laptops to schools such Kings Oak, Lovelace, Knollmead, Christchurch and King Athelstan Primary schools with more schools waiting to take receipt of devices. It is the mission of KKC to deliver 200 laptops before the end of the Summer term, but they need many more donations to achieve this.
