Les Gets Ski Holiday Review

‘This is my kind of home’ my daughter announced as she discovered the wooden bunk room. Chalet Louis turns out to be my kind of home too, a beautifully designed luxury ski chalet, nestled in the French Alps with sensational views across the picturesque valley of Les Gets.

As we drove into the village of Les Gets, there were squeals of delight from the backseat as the open-air ice rink came into view. The village streets are lined with wooden chalet boutiques and bars, setting the scene for essential après ski. A kids’ toboggan area lies at the bottom of the gondola that reaches from the heart of Les Gets straight into the mountain, creating a family atmosphere that brings families back year after year.

We were staying a little way up the mountain where we could enjoy the most spectacular sunsets each evening from the living room. It was the perfect location for our holiday, especially with the Morgan Jupe drivers on hand to shuttle us between the chalet, slopes and town. Chalet Louis has been beautifully designed for the ultimate family ski holiday and the view from the lounge is instantly arresting. The open-plan living space is cleverly designed so that everyone has space to do their own thing but still be in earshot. The uber-cool kitchen became a hub for excited conversations over delicious home-cooked breakfasts as we anticipated the day’s ski adventures that lay ahead.

Ski Lessons

Les Gets ski holiday

Our ski lessons, started with some essential help putting on boots, George from Peak Snowsports has an incredible ski resume but was brilliantly patient with our mixed ability family. Peak Snowsports is run by three brothers, (who co-incidentally hail from SW London) and have a base in Surrey and Les Gets. Surprisingly, we were soon gliding down the nursery slopes with no mishaps and after two hours George had given us enough skills and confidence to ski independently. The nursery slope is just at the top of the gondola, with a choice of restaurants so we stopped for lunch and killer hot chocolates before heading out to practice our morning’s lessons.

Les Gets is a small and friendly ski resort, part of the bigger Portes du Soleil ski region. It is one of the largest ski regions with over 650km of mainly blue and red runs connecting it to the other ski resorts. Children’s ski schools expertly navigated the snow as kids as young as three proficiently zigzagged down the slopes. By day two, George was teaching us to traverse the green and blue runs. One of the biggest perks was the enjoyment of learning together rather than in separate schools, our ski instructor responded to the different levels of teaching as it was needed.

Family friendly activities in Les Gets, Morzine and Portes du Soleil

We found half a day on the slopes was about enough for our young children so were happy to find plenty of other family-friendly activities on tap. Ice-skating was, of course, high up on the list, and we explored a few of the dedicated tobogganing runs to much hilarity. Plus there is Husky sledging and horse and cart riding nearby.

“as the sun set perfectly at the end of the valley, we enjoyed time luxuriating in the open-plan living room, with sofas draped with blankets, playing board games and reading”

Afternoon tea at chalet Louis

After lots of outdoor activity we devoured afternoon tea and freshly baked cakes made by our chalet host as we debriefed the fun and falls of the day. After which the kids evaporated to the snug on the mezzanine level to watch movies or play computer games leaving the adults to enjoy some après ski.

As the sun sets…

This is the ultimate time of day at chalet Louis, as the sun set perfectly at the end of the valley, and we enjoyed time luxuriating in the open-plan living room, sofas draped with blankets, playing board games and reading, with plenty of space for everyone to be together or do their own thing. My favourite place to watch the sunset was from the hot tub with a glass of wine in hand, taking a moment to reflect on the beauty before deciding on the evening’s entertainment. The beauty of this B&B catered chalet is having the choice; to stay in and have pizzas, go out and enjoy a meal in Les Gets or enjoy the luxury of having a chef for the evening. The Morgan Jupe team was always brilliantly attentive and made sure whatever we wanted was arranged seamlessly leaving us to enjoy the very best of Les Gets chalet Louis.
