Spring Diary of a South West London Photographer

Local photographer Andrew Wilson, shares his photos of nature in Barnes during lockdown

In these extraordinary times, our open spaces and gardens have become havens as we look to break the monotony of the lockdown and take our daily exercise. Thankfully, this spring, nature is largely ignoring what is going on in the wider world and is performing its regular magic. One obvious bonus is the councils have clearly got their hands full and are not mowing absolutely every last little piece of green space like they normally do and its allowed some wonderful displays of buttercups and daisies near me in West Putney.

Photography walks across Barnes Common

As our little forays out of our front doors have become so precious, I now take an almost forensic look at the nature around me as I take my daily walk across Barnes and Putney Common. Although not the gardeners favourite, Green Alkanet has proliferated this spring and being such a valuable source of nectar at this early time in the year it has been a magnet for all kinds of insects from butterflies to bees.

Those lucky enough to have a garden have also benefited from the extra time we have had to ourselves and I didn’t lose any time pointing my lens in the direction of my own. Besides the verges hasn’t the blossom and wisteria been wonderful this year and something that will stay with me long after this awful virus has departed.

On the odd occasion I have ventured further afield, its been lovely to see that a large family of swans has taken up residency in Putney. They now have over 30 in Richmond and it’s fun to think we might have as many here too. Keep safe…
