The Swords Travel Diaries: Dive into the Maldives

Travel expert Mark from Swords Travel in Wimbledon, reviews three paradise Maldives holiday destinations on the trip of a lifetime

Have you ever seen photos of the stunning Maldivian islands and wondered what a holiday would be like there? I have been lucky enough to just return from a once in a lifetime trip to the Maldives, staying at three of the top resorts. Read on to be inspired…

ULTIMATE LUXURY: GILI LANKANFUSHI

Gili Lankanfushi is a world renowned experience like no other, and very easy to access with just a 20 minute speedboat transfer from Male. You are greeted with an array of smiles from a wonderful team, and your own private butler (Mr & Mrs Friday). The villas at Gili Lankanfushi are all overwater and are some of the best I’ve seen in my 17 years of travel. The food was a real experience, with head chef Hari catering for everyone – including vegan meals. I felt so at home at this resort and didn’t want to leave. The team, food and setting make Gili an unforgettable stay.

OVERLOOKING THE BEACH: COMO COCOA ISLAND

Cocoa island is situated 45 minutes from Male airport via speedboat. As soon as I arrived on the island, I was impressed with the personal service and attention to detail. Cocoa is a smaller island, absolutely perfect for anyone looking for something more boutique. During my two night stay I loved the food, spacious over-water villas its close proximity to Male. They have a fantastic COMO Shambhala spa and a great wellness activity programme, with a brand new gym overlooking the stunning beach and ocean.

FAMILY FRIENDLY Maldives: COMO MAALIFUSHI

Maalifushi is a one hour seaplane from Male and instantly has that WOW factor on arrival, being much more remote. The resort is larger and perfect for families with a kid’s club, but also has more choices for dining as well as a more relaxed feel. My highlight at Maalifushi was the house reef which you can access directly from the beach. The snorkelling experience was breathtaking and was the best I experienced during my trip. Another highlight of my stay was sailing over to private island for a BBQ picnic lunch. The resort also offers beach villas as well as overwater options with multiple bedrooms.
