Beginner or pro, there’s nothing like a turn around the ice over the winter. Some are open all-year-round, others pop up just for the season. Either way, it’s great exercise, fun and festive… here’s our top picks of where to skate in London and Surrey.

Natural History Museum

Flanked by the stunning museum buildings of Exhibition Road on one side, and sparking fairy-light covered trees on the other, the winter ice rink at The Natural History Museum is one of the most scenic on offer. Hampton Court Palace

Surrey’s beautiful ice rink returns this festive season at Hampton Court Palace. Skate against a backdrop of Henry VIII’s Tudor home beneath a starry sky before enjoying festive tipples, loaded hot chocolate and tasty pies. 22 November – 5 January; From £10.50; Times vary; Hampton Court

Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre

Guildford Spectrum

Dance on ice at Guildford Spectrum where a live DJ plays out disco hits from Thursday to Sunday night, or head out on a Simply Skate day for a more relaxing session. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Draw yourself away from Winter Wonderland’s fairground rides and market stalls and take to the ice at the UK’s largest outdoor ice rink. Open throughout the day, skate sessions are accompanied by live music from Hyde Park’s bandstand, with twinkling lights illuminating the ice. 21 November – 5 January; 10am – 10pm; From £7.50, Hyde Park.

Skate at Somerset House

Under a 40ft Christmas tree in the Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court of Somerset House sits one of London’s most picturesque winter ice rinks. Treat yourself post-skate to Champagne and fondue by Fortnum & Mason before picking up some luxury gifts at their on-site Christmas Arcade. Tower of London

Soak up the breath-taking views of the 1,000 year old fortress while skating alongside the River Thames at The Tower of London Ice Rink. The remarkable setting leaves skaters in awe as the sun sets and the London landmark is lit, creating a dramatic ambience. Reigate on Ice
