The Swords Travel Diaries: Canada

Mark and the team at Swords Travel find out what a holiday to Canada can offer

From the stunning coastal scenery of Atlantic Canada to the Prairie Provinces with their wheat–filled fields; from the stunning Rocky Mountains to Pacific Ocean, Canada is extravagant in its diversity. Each region is unique and has its own charm. Exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities coupled with exciting, cosmopolitan cities, remote lodges, ranch stays, rail journeys and cruises – Canada has it all!

On my own recent travels, I was lucky enough to experience the stunning Canadian Rockies in style. Staying at some of Canada’s finest resorts but also incorporating and independent self-drive tour as part of my trip. The highlight for me was certainly travelling from Jasper to Vancouver on the iconic Rocky Mountaineer. We travelled in style in the GoldLeaf cabin and it was certainly worth the upgrade. With enhanced service, gourmet dining and uninterrupted views of the stunning Canadian mountains and wildlife.

However, Canada is more than just the Rockies and there are so many parts of this country to consider when planning your next trip. Here’s a short summary of some of the areas we would urge you to consider;

Atlantic Canada – Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador each offer their unique charms, attractions and coastal adventures including great whale watching excursions. If spectacular and pristine coastal scenery, small fishing villages and fresh, abundant seafood is of interest then you’ll love Atlantic Canada. With a short flight time of just six hours, Canada is closer than you think!

Quebec and Ontario – perfect for stand-alone visits but these two provinces also link ideally for a self-drive, rail or escorted tour holiday. Cosmopolitan and historic cities, Niagara Falls, one of the world’s natural wonders, wildlife viewing, lakeside resorts and fantastic fall colours to rival those of New England – these provinces are yours to discover. UK to Toronto is just seven hours from London!

Alberta and British Columbia – perhaps the most well-known regions of Canada mainly due to the Rocky Mountains, Banff and Jasper National Parks and Vancouver, one of the most magnificent cities in the world. Add in the world-famous Rocky Mountaineer train journey, unsurpassed wildlife viewing including grizzly bears and orcas, world-class salmon fishing, remote lodges and even Alaska cruises from Vancouver – western Canada will, no doubt, exceed your expectations. The views of the iconic Lake Louise are one of the most Instagrammed images of Canada, and it’s easy to see why.

So, whether it’s a cross country journey, a fun filled family adventure, or a romantic getaway, Canada will have something for all travellers.

As ever, booking in advance will get you the best deals!
