Wedding Style 2020

Whether you are the bride, guest or bridesmaid, we look at the hottest trends this year

For Brides

Last year, it was all about classical lines and traditional nods inspired by royal weddings but 2020 sees a move towards fuller flowing skirts, statement veils and Victoriana-esque dresses with high necklines, sheer and ruffled sleeves, to layers of tulle and intricate embroidery, even showcasing personalised inscriptions and messages.

Couture wedding dress designer Phillipa Lepley notes: “Tulle has always been an essential bridal fabric, even if it is fairly Marmite, but in 2020 it will really have its moment! It is such a natural, floaty, romantic fabric.” Another key trend is brides picking an evening outfit too. “Brides are generally opting for ivory or pastel coloured dresses with no trains, that are more sexy than the actual wedding dress. They have more movement and less dress, and they are showing more flesh.”

For a more pared-down bridal look, trouser suits and separates are an on-trend alternative. Or go for a slimline shape covered in sequins. Consider your dress from all angles: a low or backless dress will looking stunning for the first dance.

For Bridesmaids

Gone are the days of matchy-matchy bridesmaids. Showcasing individuality is key while still looking co-ordinated. This can be achieved with matching or tonal colours but in different styles, for example. Watch out, too, for a return in popularity of the cowl neck and mid-length hemlines. In an era where we are all thinking about our eco footprint, consider bridesmaid dresses that can be worn again for another occasion – classic navy will always look timeless.

For Guests

A 50s style prom dress is always flattering and will also work for summer parties. A one-shoulder dress is big news this season and will make a striking statement. Meanwhile, think super-charged florals with impact – they are perfect for a spring-summer wedding but will also earn a place in your summer holiday wardrobe. Rich colours, meanwhile, work as well for the daytime reception as they do for the evening.
