Last year, it was all about classical lines and traditional nods inspired by royal weddings but 2020 sees a move towards fuller flowing skirts, statement veils and Victoriana-esque dresses with high necklines, sheer and ruffled sleeves, to layers of tulle and intricate embroidery, even showcasing personalised inscriptions and messages.

Couture wedding dress designer Phillipa Lepley notes: “Tulle has always been an essential bridal fabric, even if it is fairly Marmite, but in 2020 it will really have its moment! It is such a natural, floaty, romantic fabric.” Another key trend is brides picking an evening outfit too. “Brides are generally opting for ivory or pastel coloured dresses with no trains, that are more sexy than the actual wedding dress. They have more movement and less dress, and they are showing more flesh.”

For a more pared-down bridal look, trouser suits and separates are an on-trend alternative. Or go for a slimline shape covered in sequins. Consider your dress from all angles: a low or backless dress will looking stunning for the first dance.

Gone are the days of matchy-matchy bridesmaids. Showcasing individuality is key while still looking co-ordinated.
