What’s on in March: 11 Fab Ideas

Local secret gardens, engaging virtual performances, creative activities and much more await this March

1

Visit Secret Gardens

Discover a local garden that you have never visited (within current restrictions, obvs) such as Fulham Palace (featured image, credit: Neil Hassell), which has a fascinating history reflecting the lives of the bishops who lived there. In March, look out for the magnolia, and you can just see the start of the 190-year-old wisteria vine blossoming. Or head to the tranquil space of Wimbledon’s Cannizaro Park.

2

Mother’s Day Treats

Bake a cake, make a card and show the mums in your life some love. We have some great recipes in our food section. Perhaps order an afternoon tea… The French Tarte offers sandwiches, mini patisseries and scones for takeaway from the Surbiton café. Or have a traditional tea delivered from 144 On The Hill.

3

Get Crafty

Handmade in Britain is hosting a Virtual Craft & Design Fair this month. This year, the fair centres around celebrating women in craft and sharing their stories. 23 – 28 March.

4

Win a golf stay in the Cotswolds

We have a fabulous prize for one lucky reader – with the chance to win a bed-and-breakfast stay at The Manor House’s Castle Inn in Wiltshire (pictured below) and a round of golf for two. Spend the day at the championship standard 18-hole course, then head back to relax in the delightful 12th-century pub. Enter Here.

5

Catch the Twits

Roald Dahl’s The Twits is being read in three parts for free thanks to the Unicorn Theatre (until 3 March). Perfect fun for ages 6 to 12. For children aged 8 to 12, there is also a reading of Philip Pullman’s Grimm Tales (until 31 March).

Art for All

Take part in the Great Big Art Exhibition (open until end of April). Sir Antony Gormley is encouraging everyone to tap into their creative sides and take part, with the idea that painting is therapeutic. A new theme will be chosen each fortnight, with people asked to display their work in their front windows.

7

See a Host of Golden Daffodils

See the daffs in bloom on a springtime walk. Best places include Ham House, Osterley Park, Polesden Lacey (all National Trust), Kew Gardens and Hampton Court Palace’s Wilderness garden.

8

Play with Polka

Polka Theatre has a host of fun activities for kids based around its shows. There’s a workshop to limber up to move like a primate for Gorilla and all the tips to create your own puppet show for The Everywhere Bear.

9

Creative Kids

Battersea Arts Centre and Wandsworth Council have teamed up with other local organisations to produce PlayKits for kids. Now available online, ideas include a Matisse collage and a cool art project inspired by the wildly decorated 575 Wandsworth Road.
