Bidding farewell to BBC’s Ghosts – filmed in Surrey!

With the ending of Ghosts looming on the horizon, we take a look back at the beloved show and explore its iconic filming location, Surrey’s West Horsley Place.

It was a sad day for Ghosts fans when it was announced that the fifth season of the much loved television show will also be its last. The season is coming to BBC One and iPlayer on Friday 6th October 2023.  The final episode – a Christmas special – will hit the screens on Christmas Day.

When it first aired in April 2019, the show quickly grew in popularity, owing largely to the charm of its ensemble cast, who previously worked together on Horrible Histories and Yonderland. It then grew into the five-season phenomenon it is today.

Surrey-based watchers may recognise the gorgeous manor house that provides the setting for the television show. West Horsley Place, found in – you guessed it – West Horsley, is an iconic building in its own right. The Grade I listed medieval manor house dates all the way back to 1425, when it was originally owned by John Bourchier, 2nd Baron Berners. The manor then passed through the hands of many until it reached the hands of Mary Innes-Ker, Duchess of Roxburghe. It was then ‘accidentally’ inherited by her nephew, former University Challenge presenter Bamber Gascoigne, under circumstances quite similar to those that transpire in Ghosts.

Nowadays, the manor is owned and managed by the West Horsley Place Trust. The Trust has worked to restore and conserve the building and its interiors, with the principal rooms now being available for public access. Regular guided tours are held at the manor, where you can explore the breath-taking grounds and gardens. You can even attend a special filming tour, where an expert guide will take you on a journey through the various films and shows the manor has been used as a location for.
