Heart cake recipe

Celebrate love and romance on the 14th of February with this surprise heart cake!

This incredibly cute recipe courtesy of Mrs Bun the Baker is ideal for a baking afternoon with your significant other. Or, a baking afternoon for your significant other. In any case, our only worry is that it might be too adorable to eat…

Ingredients

For the chocolate cake:

  • 100g margarine
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 75g plain flour
  • 75g self-raising flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoon milk
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder

For the vanilla cake:

  • 150g margarine
  • 150g caster sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 150g self-raising flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Method

  1. PREPARATION
    Preheat the oven to gas 4 or 180 C (fan 160 C).
You will need a 16-18cm lined square tin or traybake for the chocolate cake.
You will need a lined 2lb loaf tin to combine the chocolate and vanilla cake and a small heart cutter.
  2. CHOCOLATE CAKE
Place all the ingredients into a bowl and mix together with a spoon or electric whisk.
Pour the cake mix into the lined tin.
Place in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, leave to cool.
  3. VANILLA CAKE
Use the same mixing method as for chocolate cake.
    Do not cook the cake!
  4. CUT HEARTS
Take the chocolate cake out of its tin and cut heart shapes from the sponge and leave them to one side.
  5. MAKE
Place a couple of tablespoons of the vanilla cake mixture at the bottom of the loaf tin.
TIP: You need enough mixture for the hearts to stand on.
Place the chocolate hearts all in a row, down the middle of the loaf tin.
Using a teaspoon, place the vanilla mixture around the sides and top of the chocolate hearts. Continue to fill the tin with the rest of the mixture.
  6. BAKE
Place in the preheated oven for 45-60 minutes.
    Leave to cool.
