Garden Room of the Month
Garden Room Of The Month
Tom from Finch Partridge talks to Time & Leisure about their garden room of the month – a Southfields-based client for whom they built a bespoke multipurpose garden room in just 4 weeks.
What ‘problem’ did your clients come to you with?
In short, they were looking for more room, but also looking for it to be a multifunctional space. With them working from home at least a couple of days a week, there was an urgent requirement for some quiet space away from the house to concentrate. At the same time, this room provided the perfect place for gym equipment.
Tell us a bit about the design process for this garden room.
Our client’s unique challenge was to make the space feel maximised, whilst not taking over their large garden. We designed an L-shaped structure so that there could be two distinct areas – one to work as a gym and office space, and the second, a discreet area for garden storage. This was accessed from the rear and utilised the original 1930s timber doors which we refurbished and modified to fit. A patio and sliding doors at the front allows the room to be opened for entertaining.
And what about the build process and materials?
The structure sits on the footings of the previous garage, with a small extension to accommodate the L-shape. No major groundworks were required, as with most of our builds. It is clad in Hardie® Plank, a cement board which is commonly used to create the New England weatherboard look. It is a more economical choice than almost all timber cladding options, and requires no maintenance.
How has the garden room impacted the life of your clients?
An unsightly and unused garage has been replaced with a stylish and functional multi- use space. Most importantly it has created separation between home and work. Work can now be done in comfort and peace, away from the pressures and distractions of family life. This is becoming increasingly desirable as many people continue to adjust to hybrid working patterns.
