Six reasons why swimming lessons are the ideal out-of-school activity

There’s never been a better time than now to book your children’s swim lessons. Let’s find out why

It’s that time of year again. September. The long summer holidays are over and the new school year is about to start. You’ve bought the uniform and ordered the school meals, but have you organised your extra-curricular activities for the year? After all, your children don’t spend all of their time at school!

What are your expectations for an out-of-school activity? If you want your child to take part in a hobby that nourishes their body and mind, swimming does just that. If you want them to learn skills that will serve them well for the rest of their lives, swimming is the one. However, first, they have to learn. It’s time to book your children swim lessons. There is a lot of competition for your children’s spare time, so choose wisely. Here are six reasons why swim lessons are the ideal extra-curricular activity for your children.

1 – Swimming lessons keep children active

England’s Chief Medical Officer recommends children are physically active for at least 60 minutes a day, every day. However, only 17.5% of children are meeting this target. This is while 32.9% of children do fewer than 30 minutes of activity per day.

Parents need to give their children every opportunity to get off the sofa, get away from the screen and get active. Swimming lessons are the ideal choice. For half an hour to an hour, children at swimming lessons are participating in a recommended physical activity. It will make all the difference.

2 – Children need to learn to swim

While some schools offer swimming lessons to their pupils, many do not. If your child is not at a school that gives swim lessons, taking them to lessons outside of the school is the only way they will learn this valuable skill. If their school does offer lessons, extra-curricular sessions provide them with opportunities to improve.

Swimming is a lifelong skill that you never forget. Plus, it could save your life one day. This is possibly the most compelling reason to enrol your child into swim lessons today.

3 – It’s worthwhile for parents

When choosing an activity for their children, most parents want something that is a worthwhile investment of time and money. Swimming ticks both of those boxes.

Parents get a real thrill out of seeing their children learn to swim, then improve and develop. Who knows, they may even get to watch them compete in the future? Parents can support their children as they learn by taking them swimming independently. It certainly helps them enjoy themselves around the pool on holiday, being able to relax knowing their children are safe in the water.

4 – It boosts children’s social skills

When they join a new swimming class, children meet a whole new group of other pupils they may not have previously known. It’s a great place for them to make new friends, or share great experiences with friends they already have.

During the class, children get to practise listening, following instructions and waiting their turn; all useful soft skills.

5 – Swimming improves overall health

There are so many health benefits to swimming that it’s hard to find space to list them all. As an activity, it ticks all the boxes for physical fitness.

Unlike other sports, swimming is not running-based. Children get to be active without wearing shoes. Swimming allows the feet to move freely, stimulating the rich nerve endings in the ends of the feet.

Swimming improves upper body strength, with the symmetric actions helping children to improve their dexterity. It builds muscle strength, tone and endurance. Plus, it is low- impact, meaning children are unlikely to injure themselves while swimming.

6 – Swimming helps children to relax

Anxiety is one of the most talked-about issues of the day. It is a massive problem with our young people, with more children on anti-depressants than ever before.

Swimming is one of the most relaxing things children can do. It’s shown to reduce stress levels in children. It reduces anxiety and makes children feel happier. As they improve, it boosts self-confidence. For young children, swim lessons may help them overcome their fears.

At Blue Wave, our parents are always telling us how well their children eat and sleep after a swimming lesson. It makes them tired and happy.
