Gina Conway: Know Better, Do Better

At Gina Conway Salons and Spas, I am bringing the future forward. They say in just 10 years, London will be in the midst of a water shortage, the effects of which will be devastating. With water and electricity usage being a key part of my operations, I needed to do something now and I want to share my best practices to all who will listen. I’m bringing sustainability to my business through sweeping initiatives that are making a huge difference and helping towards our goal of carbon neutrality. To manage my commitment to this I have been working with a consultant on sustainability, who inspires me daily to think about every decision from a new perspective.

Our Pledge to the Planet wall is filled with staff and customer promises about what they will change to ensure a greener future. I want to influence my team and clients so they think about their actions more.

Aveda products are perfect for me as they are wind manufactured, vegan, use cradle to cradle packaging and source ingredients ethically. I have also made these simple changes in my business:
• Moved to a 100% green supplier
• Reduced colour waste using technology that measures to the gram, meaning less pollution
• Introduced Eco Shampoo services, which is a technique designed to reduce water, product and energy wastage
• Started using First Mile for our waste, a zero landfill recycling program
• Enforced a salon ban on plastic bottles and paper coffee cups
• Replaced all lights to low energy
• Where possible, upcycled rather than throwing waste to landfill

Our clients book weeks and sometimes months in advance because they know they are going to look great, feel awesome and be a champion for good.
