Quadrant Dental Practice: Winning Smile

We talk to Judith Kinnear from Quadrant Dental Practice to find out what elevates this dental practice above and beyond

What is your area of expertise?

Dentistry doesn’t stop in the mouth: there is a direct correlation between dental and general health. So I would say that prevention of disease is at the heart of what I do. But I enjoy all aspects of dentistry. I love to make a difference to people’s natural smiles, whether it’s through whitening, straightening or, where it’s really necessary, repairing or replacing teeth.

Tell us about your business

Quadrant Dental Practice has been based in Epsom for over 50 years. I joined the practice in 1997. Working with my colleagues over the years, we have made a well-respected practice among the local residents and fellow professionals. Our services include all what one expects from general dentistry and we have a full-time hygiene room. In the near future we will be welcoming a specialist periodontist and implant surgeon. We regularly receive referrals from my professional specialist colleagues who have come to see for their own eyes the high quality of dentistry we provide. I am really looking forward to taking the practice to the next level as I take the helm as principal this year. The future is bright. The future is Quadrant Dental Practice!

How did you get into your chosen career and why?

Like many of my generation, unfortunately I didn’t have the best of experiences of dentistry as a child. If you had asked the nine-year-old me what I would do in my career, dentistry would not have been my answer! However, I knew that I wanted to work with people, I wanted to work with my hands, and I really wanted to make a difference. Loving science in school and being very practically minded, I looked at a number of careers in health through work shadowing in my holidays, and I will never forget how all the lights went on in my head when I sat in with a dentist working. It surprised me and inspired me. I have never looked back.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

People are so incredibly interesting and all have their own unique story. Working in general practice, I have the privilege of seeing families grow and develop and I am fortunate to have several generations of the same family as patients. I really enjoy communicating what I do in an accessible way, using physical examples of treatment options, photographs of the inside of the mouth, and using language that isn’t jargon. My patient and I can make a plan to work through together, rather than a treatment being suggested without really understanding the ‘what, where, why and who?’.

Is there a secret to your success?

Essentially I love what I do and I feel privileged to have the trust of my patients. I would hate to have a job that caused me to force myself out of bed every morning. Hard work, determination, and going the extra mile for people really does make a difference. I am so grateful for the training I received at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals – it really is the best dental training school in the UK in my opinion!

What do your clients value most about your services?

My friendly and open approach to their care. Our patients receive high quality dentistry in a friendly, judgement-free environment. I do not believe in ‘selling’ dentistry. I treat patients like I would hope to be treated. Some of my patients come from a long way to see me: New
me so that we can work together towards a lifelong healthy and beautiful smile. To quote Malala Yousafzai: “Education is education. We should learn everything and then choose which path to follow. Education is neither eastern nor western. It is human.”
