Solstice is an immersive experience for small children, where you are transported on a light trail through the seasons.

It was designed and created by Wild Rumpus and takes over six rooms at Battersea Arts Centre, which have different themes and scenes from the seasons.

The first rooms are Spring and Summer and particularly impressive are the giant glowing eggs and the huge colourful explosion of painted flowers and bees.

But it’s the puppetry that is the trail’s highlight.

We meet a giant dragonfly puppet in one of the early rooms and as we go through to the winter areas, there is a wonderful encounter with a life like wolf which is excellently handled by the puppeteers.

So much so that my 5- year old was slightly apprehensive about getting too close to the magical creature!

The trail ends with the making of a solstice star, where you write down your intentions for the next season or year, and string the star to the Solstice tree- a sweet interactive touch.

Half an hour is recommended for the tour, but you can take it at your own pace and we enjoyed sitting and relaxing in the dark winter room and looking at the different shaped moons.

A lovely few moments of calm and tranquillity if you want to escape the Christmas chaos for a while!
