Autumn Escapes: Our Top Travel Picks This Month

Autumn Escapes: Our Top Travel Picks This Month

Whether you’re looking to make the most of the half term or fancy a weekend escape for two, here’s where to head to this month…

Autumn in New York

After its hot and humid summer and before the peak festive season starts, October is a great month for a city break in New York. Whatever the weather does, there’s a host of fabulous attractions such as the American Museum of Natural History and the Guggenheim. See the city dazzle below from the Empire State Building or admire the fall colours in Central Park from a horse-drawn carriage. And given how big a deal Halloween is in the US, you can be guaranteed some ghoulish fun. There’s a fabulous Halloween parade and just outside the city you’ll find the The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, with thousands of decorated pumpkins. Then head out to the Catskill Mountains for its incredible autumn display

Oman for Outdoor Fun

An ideal half term family break, October in Oman promises sunshine and blue skies. Kids will love watching the stars from a desert camp or going out in 4x4s. Go and see the impressive dunes at Wahiba Sands, see Oman’s ‘Grand Canyon’ Jebel Shams, and visit Muscat’s souks. Then just chill by the pool in a top hotel or head out for snorkelling and dolphin-spotting.

Weekends Away

For an easy win on your doorstep, head to Marlow. This pretty Buckinghamshire town on the Thames is just the place for a weekend break. There’s plenty to offer, both on fine days and for when the weather is unkind. When the sun shines, admire autumn colour with a walk along the river through Higginson Park. On rainy days, book a pottery session at Keeeps on the delightful high street, enjoy some boutique shopping, then take your pick from a host of fabulous restaurants – it’s the home to three of Tom Kerridge’s restaurants, two of Atul Kochhar’s, as well as top new Mediterranean opening Lavvin. Hunker down in a cosy room at The Compleat Angler and watch the lights twinkle on the suspension bridge.

Enjoy Dark Skies

Head to Exmoor National Park for its Dark Skies Festival, with events for all. During the day, you can enjoy a stunning autumnal walk, then book for a Dusk Wildlife Safari or join in a stargazing and pizza night. There’s even yoga under the stars. You can head out for some sea air along the coast, taking in pretty towns such as Ilfracombe and Combe Martin. Enjoy horseriding and cycling then retreat to a pub with a roaring fire.
