TRAVEL LUST LIST 2022

LUST LIST 2022

Holiday inspiration for the year ahead, whether you’re seeking luxury by the sea or a cultural tour off-the-beaten track…

Tours with a twist

Many of us want holidays that will immerse us in the culture and history of a place. Tour Galicia, picking up the pilgrim trail of the Camino de Santiago, enjoying incredible food and wine and walking through dramatic scenery. Wild Frontiers Travel offers a tour in May and September that takes in the Ribeira Sacra winelands, cooking and walks through the ‘terra de meigas’ – the land of witches – as Galicia is known.

Or head to Egypt. 2022 marks 100 years since the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings. The famous golden mask of the boy-king, alongside displays of other priceless pieces, will go on permanent public display, following their recent world tour, when Cairo’s new Grand Egyptian Museum – overlooking the Pyramids at Giza – opens. Take a luxurious paddle steamer cruise on the Nile with Jules Verne.

Luxury retreats

After the last couple of years, we could all use some relaxation in a luxurious spot. The Maldives is growing in popularity for a family trip and is not just for honeymooners. Located on the Gaafu Alifu Atoll, the Pullman Maldives Maamutaa Resort offers a range of activities, including a PADI mermaid course for adults and children aged six upwards where you can learn the magical skills of a mermaid. There are also underwater villas so you can see the incredible marine life from your room.

Get active

While Greece has long been a beach holiday favourite, it’s also the perfect spot for more active holidays. Head to the Epirus region on the mainland for spectacular scenery. Situated in West Zagori, Aristi Mountain Resort & Villas is off the tourist radar and surrounded by wild and rugged mountains. You can go trekking, horse riding and rafting then chill with yoga and meditation or take a cooking class. MarBella Elix, near Parga, is perfect for families with hiking, sea kayaking and cycling.

See the US from a new perspective

One popular trend for 2022 is to combine a city break with the beach without the need to cross borders, notes Audley Travel. This offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in some culture and combine it with some downtime by the sea. Discover San Francisco before heading off on a road trip through California taking in the wild coastline. If a road trip is not for you, you could take a train journey such as The Rocky Mountaineer from Denver to Moab, with jaw-dropping scenery along the way.

Take a green safari

Enjoy a more mindful safari experience with less environmental impact and no noise pollution. Try Luxtripper’s Ultimate Green Safari in Zambia & Malawi using electric safari vehicles and electric boats. Spot big game, then kayak on the peaceful Lake Malawi. Head to the Chisa Busanga Camp, a luxury lodge where you can stay in an elevated ‘nest’ with incredible views over the plains.
